There are several solutions to fix it that involve using closed or in-ear earphones (not necessarily expensive, such the Senheiser IE4) but a simple software trick might do the magic. Here it is:

instead of using the DAW click (whose volume – as in Apple’s Garageband – is linked to the master volume) just get a software drums track made – let’s say – only by a kick shot or a snare (a percussion track might work better).

Convert this track from a software instrument to a real audio track.

Import your drum track into your project, mute the metronome, and adjust the drum track volume at your convenience. Since the drum track is a normal track, indeed, the volume is independent from the other parts so you get more flexibility in the volume handling.

This is a far-from-perfect solution, but we’ve found it useful.

A common problem in classical music/solo instrument home-studio recording is the bleeding of the metronome click from the earphone through the mic into the audio track.
